Chronic Vague Communication as Commitment-Avoidance Wrong Attractor: The Ambiguity-Maintenance Architecture, Direct-Statement Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Precise Expression

Chronic vague communication is the compulsion to express oneself through systematic hedges, underspecified claims, and deliberately ambiguous statements in order to avoid accountability. We analyze this pattern as a wrong attractor W within the Phronesis Issues framework, positioned against ground state S^0: the state of calibrated, precise, and trustworthy expression. The Ambiguity-Maintenance Architecture (AMA) describes the self-reinforcing system by which speakers generate and sustain unclear communication as a commitment-avoidance mechanism.

The Direct-Statement Foreclosure Basin (DSFB) names the attractor neighborhood that prevents return to clear, accountable speech—a region where direct statement feels exposing, dangerous, or categorically unavailable. We develop nine propositions: accountability-anxiety as the primordial driver (P1); the interpretive gap as strategic asset maintained by the speaker (P2); listener burden and the compulsion to request repeated clarification (P3); speaker deniability and the identity lock-in that follows (P4); relational trust erosion as the structural consequence (P5); the distinction between contextually useful ambiguity and compulsive vagueness (P6); return requiring the unmistakable statement (P7); gradual recalibration through precision practice (P8); and S^0 as the stable state of language that can be trusted (P9).

We close with a clinical and relational account of what it means to speak in a way that can be held.
