Emotional processing is a fundamental capacity of a functioning agent. In its calibrated form, the person registers a difficult experience, engages with it sufficiently to metabolise its emotional charge, integrates the event into a broadening self-narrative, and returns to present-oriented functioning with reduced residual burden. Chronic venting is formally reconceptualised here within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W_ CV in the landscape of emotional functioning, structurally distinct from the healthy ground state S^0_ CEP — Calibrated Emotional Processing — which is the capacity to acknowledge, process, and integrate emotional experience without compulsive rehearsal or narrative fixation.
The chronic venter seeks relief through repeated narration of the problem, and paradoxically maintains the problem state through the very act of narrating it: each telling rehearses and consolidates the negative interpretation, prevents the development of genuine processing capacity, and recruits social reward that reinforces the venting behaviour rather than its resolution. This is the Catharsis Paradox: the behaviour designed to release emotional burden perpetuates and deepens it.
Three sustaining mechanisms are identified and formally characterised: (1) catharsis-myth encoding, in which the belief that expression equals resolution makes venting feel like genuine work while displacing the actual work of emotional processing; (2) sympathetic-attention reward, in which social validation and attention obtained during venting episodes function as positive reinforcement sustaining the behaviour regardless of its processing outcome; and (3) problem-identity consolidation, in which repeated narration of the problem progressively incorporates the problem into the self-concept, raising the psychological cost of resolution because resolution would entail self-concept disruption.
Nine propositions formalise these mechanisms, the dynamics of the problem-state-maintenance basin, the formal distinction between venting and genuine emotional processing, and the return paths to S^0_ CEP through structured processing, narrative revision, and social recalibration. The paper draws on Bushman's catharsis-myth research, Nolen-Hoeksema's co-rumination findings, Rose et al.'s work on adolescent co-rumination, Pennebaker's structured expressive writing as a positive contrast case, Gross's emotion regulation framework, and Zech and Rim\'e's direct evidence that venting does not resolve emotion, to ground the formal treatment in established empirical literature.
