Chronic Victimhood-Maintenance as Agency-Forfeiture Wrong Attractor: The Victim-Identity Architecture, Agency-Threat Encoding Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Agency

Chronic victimhood-maintenance is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CVM within the displacement framework, carefully distinguished from genuine victimhood and appropriate recognition of harm. Here the person has organized their identity around victim status; experiences are processed primarily for their victim-relevance; agency is systematically disclaimed; being harmed becomes a permanent defining characteristic rather than an event that occurred.

The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated agency: the capacity to acknowledge genuine harm, receive appropriate support, grieve real losses, and re-engage with agency — holding both that harm occurred and that one is still a capable agent. Three mechanisms sustain the victimhood basin: victim-identity consolidation (the victim role provides a stable identity that organizes experience, confers moral position, claims on sympathy, and exemption from certain demands; these benefits make the identity genuinely rewarding even as it entraps); agency-threat encoding (taking initiative and being effective are experienced as threatening because effectiveness would undermine the victim identity; success therefore becomes threatening rather than rewarding, producing systematic self-limitation); and harm-scanning amplification (current experiences are scanned for evidence of ongoing harm; neutral events are interpreted as hostile; minor slights are processed as major violations, ensuring a continuous supply of victim-relevant material).

The Victim Paradox states: chronic victimhood-maintenance reliably perpetuates the suffering it is organized to have acknowledged; the forfeiture of agency ensures that life continues to be organized by circumstances rather than choices; genuine recovery requires precisely the agency that the victim identity forecloses.
