Compulsive Body-Monitoring as Somatic-Vigilance Wrong Attractor: The Body-as-Threat-Field Architecture, Attention-Amplification Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Somatic Awareness

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · somatic-vigilance wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

The capacity to inhabit the body without continuous surveillance — to receive genuine signals, respond appropriately, and otherwise experience the body as context rather than object of scrutiny — constitutes a foundational dimension of psychological health. This paper formalizes the chronic absence of that capacity as a wrong attractor W_ CBM (compulsive body-monitoring) within the displacement framework.

The person living in W_ CBM maintains an ongoing hypervigilant scan of bodily sensations: not primarily organized around a specific feared diagnosis, as in illness anxiety disorder, but as a generalized background state of somatic surveillance. The body is experienced as a continuously alarming environment — a field of potential threat signals that must be tracked, assessed, and interpreted before ordinary life can proceed.

Mundane sensations (tension, warmth, fatigue, fullness, minor pain) are amplified by the attention directed toward them and then scrutinized for pathological significance. We designate the healthy ground state S^0 as calibrated somatic awareness: the condition of genuine responsiveness to bodily signals, appropriate action when those signals warrant it, and background embodiment otherwise.

Three interlocking mechanisms sustain the wrong attractor: body-as-threat-field encoding, in which sensations are processed through a standing threat-detection lens; the attention-amplification loop, in which monitoring generates the very signals it is organized to detect; and the somatic-certainty requirement, in which the demand for certain safety about sensations cannot be met and therefore drives perpetual re-examination.

Nine formal propositions articulate the structure of the attractor and its basin-maintenance dynamics. The paper introduces and proves the Monitoring Paradox: compulsive body-monitoring reliably produces the somatic suffering it is organized to prevent. Attention amplifies ordinary sensations into genuine discomfort; vigilance-induced hyperarousal generates somatic symptoms (tension, nausea, fatigue) that confirm the need for continued monitoring; the body genuinely becomes more uncomfortable under surveillance than it would otherwise be.

Developmental roots include childhood illness in the family, early experiences of unexplained somatic symptoms, and environments in which physical complaint was the primary route to care. Return paths include attention-redirection practice, somatic exposure (accepting sensations without monitoring), and Internal Family Systems work on the body-monitor part and the vulnerability exile it protects.
