Compulsive confession is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CCF within the displacement framework: the chronic compulsion to confess, reveal, or admit wrongdoing, inadequacy, or moral failure beyond what genuine accountability requires. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated accountability — the capacity to acknowledge genuine wrongdoing, make appropriate repair, close the accountability process, and hold private failures privately when no genuine harm requires disclosure.
W_CCF is distinguished from genuine accountability (organized around repair of harm): this pattern is organized around self-regulation of guilt rather than genuine relationship repair. Three mechanisms sustain the confession basin: guilt-intolerance (the person cannot hold guilt internally; it must be externalized through confession or the anxiety is intolerable; the internal processing route — feeling guilty, understanding what it signals, making needed repair, and releasing it — is unavailable or insufficient; only external discharge provides temporary relief); the confession-as-absolution belief (confession is understood as generating absolution; the transaction fails to reliably deliver because the underlying shame is not resolved by confession, but the belief that it should is maintained, motivating more thorough confession); and confessable-material scanning (chronic monitoring of one's own behavior and thoughts for confessable material; the scanning is experienced as moral conscientiousness but generates what it appears to merely detect; because the standard is subjective and the scanning constant, new confessable material is reliably produced).
The central Transparency Paradox states: compulsive confession reliably produces the guilt it is organized to eliminate; more confession produces more relief cycles that produce more scanning that produces more material; genuine guilt-resolution requires internal processing capacity that the confession-loop systematically prevents from developing. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in religious environments and families requiring transparency as a condition of love.
Return paths include internal guilt processing practice, IFS work on the confessor part and shame exile, and graduated tolerance of private failure.
