The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated interdependence: the capacity to both give and receive support, to acknowledge genuine need without shame, and to engage in the reciprocal vulnerability that constitutes genuine relationship.
Three mechanisms sustain the counter-dependence basin: need-as-weakness equation (any experience of needing another person is processed as evidence of inadequacy; the person is highly motivated to eliminate need states or conceal them; independence is experienced not as a capacity but as a requirement for self-regard); dependency-as-danger encoding (experiences of reliance or vulnerability are encoded as dangerous based on early attachment experiences where need was punished, ignored, or exploited; the nervous system treats the state of needing as a threat-signal regardless of current context); and radical-self-sufficiency performance (the person constructs an elaborate system of life practices that demonstrably prove their independence; this performance is experienced as strength but constitutes chronic isolation).
The Self-Sufficiency Paradox states: compulsive counter-dependence reliably produces the isolation it is organized to make safe; the systematic elimination of genuine need from relationships removes the substrate for genuine intimacy; the person who needs nothing from others receives nothing, including the care and connection that would allow genuine need to feel safe. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in avoidant attachment.
