PhronesisWe apply the Displacement Framework to compulsive envy-expression—the habitual, socially deployed pattern of naming what others have, often through “must be nice” commentary and shared diminishment rituals—and formalize it as a wrong attractor in the social-bonding landscape. The ground state S^0 is calibrated generous witnessing: the capacity to observe others' good fortune, acknowledge one's own felt response honestly in private, and offer genuine appreciation in the relational field.
From S^0, envy is an intelligible signal—information about one's own desires and shortfalls—not a performance. The wrong attractor W_EE is the state in which envy-expression becomes the primary social-bonding mechanism: connection is sought through shared complaint about others' advantages, and the expression of envy substitutes for genuine contact. We identify the Shared-Diminishment Architecture as the five-stage cycle maintaining W_EE: success observed inadequacy activated envy expressed as bonding bid brief connection formed deeper isolation from genuine appreciation.
We formalize the Authentic-Appreciation Foreclosure Basin, in which genuinely celebrating another's success triggers the threat of one's own insufficiency, rendering authentic appreciation dynamically inaccessible. The cost functional = D()\, dt accumulates through relational toxicity, foreclosure of admiration, identity consolidation as “the honest realist,” and gradual loss of genuine connection.
Nine propositions are derived. Return to S^0 requires distinguishing private envy-acknowledgment (useful signal) from social envy-expression (bonding attempt), developing the capacity to hold appreciation and one's own lack simultaneously, and tolerating the discomfort that comes with genuinely witnessing another's flourishing. We situate the analysis in Aristotle's distinction between envy and emulation, Smith's theory of sympathy, Schoeck's sociology of envy, Parrott and Smith's taxonomy of envy subtypes, the tall-poppy literature, and Festinger's social comparison theory.
