Compulsive Experience-Documentation as Mediated-Living Wrong Attractor: The Record-It-or-Lose-It Architecture, Camera-Between-Self-and-World Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Direct Presence

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · mediated-living wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

We formalize compulsive experience-documentation — the pattern of filming, photographing, and recording lived experiences primarily and compulsively, in a way that mediates rather than enhances direct experiential contact — as a dynamical wrong attractor in the Phronesis Issues framework. The compulsive documenter cannot inhabit an event without simultaneously capturing it; capture becomes the primary activity and the experience feels incomplete, “wasted,” or epistemically unreal if not recorded.

We identify three interlocking sustaining mechanisms that stabilize this attractor: (1) the loss-prevention imperative, whereby documentation is experienced as the sole mechanism of memory and meaning, making non-documentation feel like loss rather than presence; (2) the transmission-to-others requirement, whereby experiences are processed as content for an imagined audience rather than as contact with life; and (3) record-as-proof-of-living encoding, whereby accumulated archives come to feel like evidence of a life well-lived, displacing the felt sense of meaning from experiential contact to repository existence.

We show that these three mechanisms are mutually reinforcing, form a stable basin with compulsive documentation as a fixed point, and that convergence to this attractor is accelerated by the design architecture of contemporary camera and sharing platforms. We introduce a formal ODE model capturing the dynamics of experiential presence and documentational mediation, prove nine propositions characterizing attractor stability and exit conditions, and specify the ground state — Calibrated Direct Presence — as the correct target: selective, temporally deferred documentation that serves experience rather than replacing it.

We distinguish this pattern carefully from compulsive selfie-taking (Paper \#709, appearance-focused) and compulsive journaling (processing-substitute), and identify clinical and design-level interventions oriented toward return.
