This paper formalizes the chronic absence of that capacity as the compulsive expertise-signaling wrong attractor W_ CES within the displacement framework.
The person living in W_ CES compulsively introduces demonstrations of expertise, specialized knowledge, or intellectual credentials into interactions regardless of whether such demonstrations serve the conversation. The urge is not content-specific — it does not concern any particular domain of knowledge — but structural: it concerns the necessity of making one's intellectual standing visible at each conversational juncture where it might otherwise remain implicit.
We designate the healthy ground state S^0 as calibrated intellectual presence: the capacity to contribute knowledge when it is useful, to be present in conversation without marking one's credentials within it, and to experience others' competence without threat. Three interlocking mechanisms sustain the wrong attractor: knowing-as-worth encoding, in which demonstrated knowledge is implicitly equated with personal value; expertise-gap sensitization, in which the system automatically detects conversational moments where one's knowledge advantage is not yet visible and experiences this invisibility as urgency; and intellectual-invisibility threat, in which conversations where one's expertise is not demonstrated are experienced as conversations in which one has disappeared or lost standing.
Nine formal propositions articulate the structure of the attractor and its basin-maintenance dynamics. The paper introduces and proves the Expertise-Signaling Paradox: the compulsive display of expertise systematically undermines the intellectual credibility it is designed to establish, because expert knowledge shared in service of relationship signals genuine competence, while expertise signaled in service of status signals insecurity.
The paradox places W_ CES in the class of self-defeating attractors, in which the sustaining mechanism defeats the attractor's own organizing goal. Developmental roots lie in environments where intellectual performance was the primary currency of worth, where love or approval was contingent on achievement, or where the child's non-intellectual qualities were systematically undervalued.
Return paths include decoupling knowing from worth, building tolerance for intellectual invisibility, and the recovery of presence without performance.
