Compulsive Future-Scripting as Uncertainty-Intolerance Wrong Attractor: The Scripting Basin, the Preparation Paradox, and the Return to Calibrated Presence

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · uncertainty-intolerance wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive future-scripting is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CFS within the displacement framework: the chronic mental rehearsal and scripting of future interactions, conversations, and events; the person who cannot enter any significant encounter without having pre-lived it extensively in imagination. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated preparation — the capacity to prepare for significant encounters appropriately, without exhaustive pre-scripting; the ability to be genuinely present to what is actually happening rather than to one's script of what was supposed to happen; to tolerate the uncertainty of genuine encounter.

Three mechanisms sustain the scripting basin: unprepared-self catastrophizing (the imagined consequence of being caught without a script is catastrophic loss of face or revealed incompetence; the protection is maintained despite its superfluousness because the evidence for its necessity is the absence of catastrophe, attributed to the script rather than to baseline relational competence); script-rehearsal reward (rehearsing the future provides temporary control and mastery that functions as an anxiolytic, reinforcing the behavior independently of its actual utility); and reality-departure distress (when the encounter departs from the script — as it always does — the person struggles to respond spontaneously because they are managing the discrepancy between script and reality rather than being present to reality).

The central Preparation Paradox states: compulsive future-scripting reliably produces the unpreparedness it is organized to prevent; the person arrives so committed to a mental script that they cannot genuinely respond to what is actually happening, and genuine response requires the spontaneity that scripting systematically atrophies. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in environments where surprise was dangerous.

Return paths include spontaneity practice, ACT defusion from planning thoughts, exposure to unscripted encounters, and IFS work on the preparing-part.
