Compulsive Future-Self Fantasy as Present-Life Wrong Attractor: The Fantasy-Displacement Architecture, Identity-in-Abeyance Basin, and the Return to Present-Oriented Engagement

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · present-life wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive future-self fantasy — the chronic pattern of living in an elaborate imagined future version of oneself, organizing daily life around a fantasy future-self rather than inhabiting the actual present, producing perpetual deferral of real engagement — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CFF in the landscape of present-oriented engagement. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as present-oriented engagement: the capacity to inhabit one's actual current life, take action from who one actually is now, and find genuine meaning in the present without requiring an idealized future-self to make life feel real or worth living.

W_CFF is rigorously distinguished from appropriate aspiration, goal-directed development, healthy identity exploration, and legitimate self-improvement. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: fantasy as displacement activity (the future-self imagination provides the felt sense of progress and meaning without requiring present action; D(ξ) is generated by present-life imperfection and ordinariness), present-self rejection (the current self is experienced as merely temporary, a larval stage to be endured until the future-self arrives; present achievements feel hollow because they belong to the wrong-attractor self), and identity-in-abeyance (all genuine self-development is deferred to the future-self; the person cannot commit to present relationships, projects, or identity because these would belong to the provisional self, not the real one who has not yet arrived).

The Future-Self Paradox is central: compulsive future-self fantasy reliably prevents the future-self from ever arriving, because the conditions for the fantasy-self's emergence can only be built through present engagement that the fantasy substitutes for. Nine formal propositions characterize the present-oriented engagement ground state, the fantasy-displacement wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the future-self paradox, developmental roots in intolerable present environments and cultural transformation narratives, and return paths through IFS present-self work, behavioral activation, ACT values clarification, and identity consolidation.
