Compulsive Humblebragging as Indirect-Status-Signaling Wrong Attractor: The Complaint-as-Boast Architecture, Credibility-Undermining Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Authentic Self-Disclosure

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive humblebragging—the habitual packaging of status signals as complaints or self-deprecation—constitutes a canonical wrong attractor in the space of interpersonal communication. In the displacement framework introduced by The Phronesis Issues, the ground state S^0 is calibrated authentic self-disclosure: sharing genuine experiences, including both achievements and difficulties, without strategically packaging them to generate social comparison or status impression.

Humblebragging represents a departure from S^0 driven by status anxiety, in which the speaker constructs utterances whose surface form is humble (complaint, self-deprecation, lament) while the communicative intent is to convey high-status information. We formalize this pattern through a displacement cost function D() measuring distance from calibrated authentic self-disclosure, and the accumulated displacement = D()\,dt characterizing the chronic pattern.

The basin of the wrong attractor deepens as the humblebrag becomes automatic and the person loses access to genuine self-disclosure. A critical asymmetry compounds the problem: listeners reliably detect humblebrags while the humblebragger typically does not recognize them as such, creating a credibility erosion that paradoxically defeats the very status goal the behavior seeks. We formalize nine propositions covering the indirect-signaling mechanism, basin depth as a function of status anxiety, the detection asymmetry, credibility destruction dynamics, and the conditions for return to S^0.

The paper concludes with a practical return protocol and a field poem by alice.
