Compulsive Invulnerability-Performance as Strength-Signal Wrong Attractor

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · strength-signal wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive invulnerability-performance (CIP) designates a chronic pattern in which a person actively performs being unaffected by difficulty, loss, disappointment, and bad news as a reputation-management and dignity-preservation strategy. CIP is distinct from emotional numbness (a genuine affective shutdown) and from spiritual bypassing (a transcendence-seeking defense): the CIP performer is genuinely affected while performing non-affectedness as a signal of strength.

The paper models CIP as a wrong attractor W_CIP in a dynamical systems framework, with ground state S0 defined as grounded equanimity — the capacity to be moved by what is moving and unmoved by what is not moving, without performance in either direction. Three generating mechanisms are identified: the vulnerability-as-weakness belief system (the core premise that being visibly affected by difficulty is evidence of weakness, and that strength requires demonstrating non-affectedness; this belief converts every difficulty into a performance opportunity and every genuine emotional response into a threat to manage); the strength-signal compulsion (the CIP performer must signal strength to maintain a reputation organized around invulnerability; each performance raises the standard for the next; the reputation becomes a prison that must be continuously maintained); and the disconnection amplification loop (as performance becomes automatized, the CIP performer loses contact with their own affective states; the disconnection produces both genuine emotional dysregulation — unfelt feelings accumulate and erupt — and relational alienation, as others cannot connect with a person who is never genuinely present to their own experience).

The central Strength Paradox states: compulsive invulnerability-performance reliably produces the fragility it is organized to prevent. Nine formal propositions formalize the attractor dynamics, phenomenology, developmental roots, and return paths.
