Compulsive Journaling as Processing-Substitute Wrong Attractor: The Write-It-Down Architecture, Ruminative-Documentation Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Reflective Practice

Reflective writing is a genuine psychological tool. Pennebaker's foundational work on expressive writing demonstrates that structured disclosure of emotionally significant events produces measurable improvements in physical and psychological health, particularly when writing integrates experience into coherent narrative. The present paper does not dispute this finding. What it formalises is a structurally distinct pattern that exploits the same surface behaviour — writing about one's inner life — while producing none of its adaptive outcomes.

This pattern, termed compulsive journaling, is reconceptualised within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W_ CJ in the landscape of emotional-processing functioning. Its ground state counterpart, S^0_ CRP — Calibrated Reflective Practice — is characterised as the capacity to use writing instrumentally: to clarify, integrate, and release emotional material, then return to behavioural engagement with one's life.

The wrong attractor emerges when journaling becomes the destination rather than the instrument — a self-sustaining loop of ruminative documentation that provides temporary emotional containment without producing behavioural change, relational repair, or genuine resolution. Three sustaining mechanisms are identified and formally characterised. First, the writing-as-processing illusion: the subjective experience of articulation is mistaken for resolution, creating the belief that having written about a problem is equivalent to having worked through it.

Second, emotional-containment-as-action substitute: the affective relief produced by externalising distress onto paper displaces the motivation to take the actions that would address the distress's sources. Third, notebook-completion satisfaction: the material, aesthetic, and ritualistic rewards of filling notebooks generate reinforcement independent of any change in the writer's life or emotional landscape.

A formal dynamical model is developed in which emotional load E(t), journaling rate J(t), and behavioural change B(t) are coupled, demonstrating that high J provides transient reduction in E but, without linkage to B, the system returns to baseline load rather than achieving sustained reduction. Nine formal propositions characterise the wrong attractor's basin of attraction, its sustaining mechanisms, its distinguishing features from adaptive expressive writing, and the conditions for return to calibrated reflective practice.

The paper draws on Pennebaker, Nolen-Hoeksema's co-rumination literature, Lyubomirsky et al.'s work on maladaptive rumination, and Sloan and Marx's analysis of why some journaling fails to produce benefit.
