Compulsive Knowledge Acquisition as Action-Deferral Wrong Attractor: The Perpetual-Preparation Architecture, Endless-Learning Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Knowledge-Action Cycles

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive knowledge acquisition — the chronic pattern of accumulating information, courses, books, frameworks, and expertise as a substitute for action, producing endless preparation that perpetually defers doing — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CKA in the landscape of calibrated knowledge-action cycles. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated knowledge-action cycling: the capacity to acquire sufficient knowledge for the action at hand, act, learn from action, and iterate — with knowledge-seeking and action in a productive feedback loop rather than knowledge serving as a perpetual prerequisite that action never satisfies.

W_CKA is rigorously distinguished from genuine skill development (which is integrated with practice), appropriate research before significant decisions, intellectual curiosity, and legitimate expertise development. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: learning as action substitute (for the compulsive knowledge acquirer, learning has become functionally equivalent to doing — providing the felt sense of progress and anxiety-reduction that should accompany action, while never producing the outcomes that action would), the sufficiency horizon (the knowledge acquirer operates under an implicit standard — when I know enough, I will act — that moves forward with each acquisition; the horizon of sufficient knowledge recedes as fast as it is approached because it is an anxiety-management standard, not an epistemic one), and expertise identity without embodiment (compulsive knowledge acquisition produces an identity as someone who knows without the competence that comes from having done; acting would expose the gap between knowledge and competence, deepening the avoidance).

The Readiness Paradox is central: compulsive knowledge acquisition reliably produces the unreadiness it is organized to resolve — by indefinitely deferring action until sufficient knowledge is achieved, the compulsive learner forestalls the action-based learning that would produce genuine competence. Nine formal propositions characterize the calibrated knowledge-action ground state, the action-deferral wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the readiness paradox, developmental roots in environments where mistakes were punished, and return paths through ACT committed action, minimum viable action experiments, and timeboxed learning cycles.
