Compulsive minimizing is formalized here as a wrong attractor W_CM within the displacement framework: a stable basin organized around the systematic downplaying, disclaiming, and deflecting of one's own achievements, capacities, and legitimate pride in response to an anticipated social threat—envy, judgment, the discomfort of others, or the perceived danger of visibility. We define the healthy ground state S^0 as calibrated acknowledged accomplishment: the capacity to recognize, name, and receive one's achievements with proportionate accuracy, neither inflating nor compulsively deflating them.
The displacement cost function D() accumulates displacement = D()\,dt through three interlocking mechanisms: envy-threat deflection (minimizing as protection against the perceived social danger of being seen to have something others do not); legitimacy anxiety (the belief that one's accomplishments do not meet an internalized bar of genuine worthiness); and identity-as-humble (a self-concept organized around modesty as virtue, such that accurate acknowledgment of achievement feels like a character violation).
W_CM is distinguished formally from appropriate modesty, culturally calibrated humility, and honest uncertainty about one's accomplishments. The paper presents nine formal propositions covering the attractor structure, the pride foreclosure basin, the double-bind architecture (minimizing is simultaneously the social protection and the psychological wound), and return paths through legitimate-pride exposure, calibrated language, and the dismantling of the minimizing-as-virtue schema.
