Compulsive Note-Taking as Memory-Distrust Wrong Attractor: The Documentation-Compulsion Architecture, Embodied-Learning Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Selective Recording

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive note-taking—the habitual, anxiety-driven documentation of experience beyond any selective or purposive recording—constitutes a stable wrong attractor in the phase space of cognitive-behavioral organization. We formalize this attractor using the displacement framework, wherein S^0 denotes the ground state of calibrated selective recording: the mode in which a practitioner commits certain experiences to memory and records only those that genuinely benefit from external inscription.

Departure from S^0 toward compulsive documentation is characterized by a displacement field and an associated cost function D() that is convex in compulsion magnitude and bounded below at the ground state. The integrated displacement = D()\,dt measures accumulated documentation-compulsion, and we show that above a critical threshold _c the learner enters a foreclosure basin from which return to S^0 requires active intervention.

We identify nine formal propositions governing the structure of the wrong attractor, its displacement cost, basin depth, the embodied-learning foreclosure mechanism, phase transitions between regimes, intervention theory, recovery dynamics, systemic effects on epistemic communities, and the ethical dimensions of coerced or self-imposed documentation culture. The framework unifies cognitive science, educational philosophy, and phenomenological traditions into a single dynamical account, offering both diagnostic criteria and principled return paths toward calibrated selective recording.
