PhronesisWe formalize compulsive politeness as a wrong attractor W_CP within the displacement framework. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated honest warmth: genuine care for others combined with the full capacity to express disagreement, displeasure, authentic reaction, and personal truth without performance anxiety or social-surface anxiety. W_CP is organized around a distinct and previously undertheorized dynamic: the performance of social grace as an end in itself, driven not by fear of rejection (people-pleasing) nor by avoidance of disagreement (conflict avoidance), but by an intolerance of social roughness so profound that smooth surface maintenance becomes the organizing principle of the self.
Three interlocking sustaining mechanisms are identified and formally characterized: (1) rudeness-intolerance encoding, in which any breach of social smoothness—whether one's own or another's—is experienced as physically aversive, generating a powerful drive to restore surface politeness that operates prior to and independently of authentic response; (2) social-surface-as-safety, in which extreme politeness functions as invisibility armor, a non-threatening signal that forecloses confrontation, demand, and exposure; and (3) accumulated authenticity debt, in which each suppressed genuine response adds to an internal backlog that cannot discharge through the polite surface, producing a growing sense of inauthenticity and depersonalization.
The central paradox formalized here is the Warmth Inversion: the compulsively polite person, who is universally experienced as warm, becomes progressively unreachable—their relational warmth is real as feeling but empty as contact, because the self producing it has been systematically evacuated. We state and prove nine formal propositions, develop a dynamical systems model of authenticity debt accumulation, examine developmental origins in early environments where genuine response was unsafe or unwelcome, specify differential diagnosis relative to people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, and social anxiety, and chart return paths through rudeness tolerance practice, authentic response anchoring, and gradual surface-roughening.
The paper extends the displacement framework's analysis of social-self wrong attractors to the domain of social grace as self-erasure.
