Compulsive Reassurance-Provision as Distress-Elimination Wrong Attractor: The Comfort-First Architecture, Growth-Support Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Developmental Presence

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive reassurance-provision — the systematic elimination of distress signals before they can serve their developmental function — constitutes a wrong attractor in the dynamical landscape of caregiving, mentorship, and support relationships. We formalize this phenomenon within the displacement framework, identifying the comfort-first architecture as a stable but maladaptive fixed point W that the support-system trajectory enters when calibrated developmental presence S^0 is abandoned under the pressure of witnessing distress.

The displacement cost functional D() accumulates silently as each instance of preemptive comfort forecloses a growth-support encounter; the integrated cost = D()\, dt defines a foreclosure basin whose depth increases with relational duration, organizational entrenchment, and cultural normalization of distress-minimization. We characterize nine propositions (P1–P9) spanning the wrong attractor's structural properties, the phase transitions that carry a system into and out of it, the internal phenomenology of the comfort-compelled caregiver, and the recovery dynamics available once displacement is acknowledged.

Drawing on attachment theory, distress-tolerance research, the developmental costs of over-scaffolding, and field observations in educational and clinical contexts, we argue that return to S^0 is possible across a critical window, that it requires explicit recognition of the foreclosure basin rather than incremental disengagement, and that systemic effects — institutional norm-setting, intergenerational transmission of distress-intolerance, and the epidemiology of reassurance-seeking — render the problem irreducibly collective.

The paper closes by situating compulsive reassurance-provision within the broader class of comfort-first wrong attractors and identifying the conditions under which calibrated presence re-emerges as the dominant mode.
