PhronesisWe analyze compulsive research-as-procrastination as a distinct class of wrong attractor in the displacement dynamics framework. Unlike idle avoidance, this attractor is constituted by activity that is genuinely productive in narrow local scope—information is acquired, understanding increases, knowledge accumulates—while the system remains systematically displaced from ground state S^0, defined as calibrated ready-enough action: acting when sufficient information is available, accepting irreducible uncertainty, and updating beliefs from the feedback of doing rather than the accumulation of further research.
The wrong attractor W captures individuals in preparation loops where “I am still researching” functions as a permanent valid response, one that carries moral cover (diligence, thoroughness, responsibility) while indefinitely forestalling the commitments it purports to prepare for. We define the displacement cost function D() measuring distance from S^0, and the accumulated displacement = D()\,dt representing the chronic preparation-loop cost.
We identify basin depth as a function of action-anxiety, model the readiness-illusion mechanism, and distinguish genuine preparation from avoidance-research by their respective derivatives with respect to action-proximity. Nine formal propositions (P_1–P_9) characterize the attractor architecture, its basin, and the return conditions. The paper concludes with a practical framework for minimum-viable-information commitment and the practice of action-as-research.
