Compulsive self-education is characterized by persistent, driven acquisition of knowledge that systematically forecloses on the application of that knowledge. We argue that this pattern constitutes a wrong attractor in the dynamical landscape of cognitive and behavioral development: a stable, self-reinforcing state that mimics productive learning while displacing the agent from the ground state of calibrated integrated mastery (S 0).
Drawing on dynamical systems theory, learning science, and clinical observation, we formalize a displacement framework in which the displacement functional = D()\, dt accumulates as the agent cycles through perpetual preparation without integration. We identify the architectural mechanisms — learning-override loops, application-foreclosure basins, and diminishing marginal utility of further acquisition — that sustain the wrong attractor and resist exit.
Nine formal propositions characterize the geometry of this basin, its stability under perturbation, and the conditions necessary for return. We distinguish compulsive self-education from genuine intellectual curiosity and adaptive learning, and situate it within a family of related phenomena including tutorial hell, analysis paralysis, impostor syndrome, and the perpetual student archetype.
The exit dynamics converge on a single principle: application, not further acquisition, is the true integrator of knowledge into mastery. Therapeutic and structural interventions are discussed.
