Compulsive Selfie-Taking as Self-Documentation Wrong Attractor: The Camera-as-Mirror Architecture, Appearance-Confirmation-Seeking Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Embodied Self-Acceptance

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

The capacity to inhabit one's body with ease—to move through the world without chronic monitoring of one's visible surface—is a foundational component of psychological wellbeing. In its calibrated form, self-perception is grounded in embodied sensation and functional adequacy, with appearance evaluated contextually rather than obsessively. Compulsive selfie-taking is formally reconceptualised here within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W_ CST in the landscape of self-relational functioning, structurally distinct from the healthy ground state S^0_ CESA — Calibrated Embodied Self-Acceptance — which is the capacity to inhabit one's appearance with sufficiency, updating self-image through lived experience rather than through compulsive photographic confirmation.

The compulsive selfie-taker has structured their self-acceptance contingently upon photographic verification: appearance is provisionally acceptable only when a satisfying image has been obtained and confirmed against an internal standard. This paper formalises the Selfie Paradox: the practice designed to confirm acceptable appearance and capture an authentic self-image systematically undermines both functions it is meant to serve.

Each photograph creates a new comparison standard; the “best angle” becomes the required angle; and authentic, embodied self-acceptance becomes progressively less accessible as the photographic record accumulates. Three sustaining mechanisms are identified and formally characterised: (1) appearance-confirmation-seeking, in which the camera functions as a mirror that must be consulted before self-acceptance can be granted, creating a contingency structure that makes acceptance perpetually deferred; (2) image-identity fusion, in which the photographic image is experienced not as a representation of the self but as the self, so that the image's imperfection constitutes self-imperfection rather than photographic limitation; and (3) filtered-self-as-standard elevation, in which the curated, filtered, optimally-angled photographic self becomes the internal benchmark against which actual embodied appearance is measured and found wanting.

Nine propositions formalise the dynamics of the appearance-confirmation-seeking basin, the standard inflation mechanism, the identity-fusion architecture, and the return paths through embodied practice, photographic abstinence, and the restoration of sensation-based self-relation. The paper is distinguished from accounts of therapeutic self-portraiture, which represents a deliberate artistic practice with fundamentally different functional architecture.

The analysis draws on Twenge's generational data, Vogel's social comparison work, Mills et al.'s direct evidence on selfies and body image, Tiggemann and Slater's Instagram research, and the theoretical frameworks of Higgins's self-discrepancy theory, Cash's body image model, and Shafran's body-checking literature.
