Compulsive Social Status Monitoring (CSSM) denotes the chronic, repetitive tracking of one's perceived position in social hierarchies—including follower counts, engagement metrics, peer-group standing, and interpersonal rank signals—in the absence of imminent social threat. Unlike social defeat syndrome, which emerges after experienced subordination or exclusion, CSSM is a proactive, anticipatory pattern: the individual monitors continuously to prevent the perceived catastrophe of status loss rather than to recover from one that has occurred.
We formalize CSSM as a wrong attractor W_CSSM in the state space of social self-regulation, characterized by a position-vigilance basin whose depth increases with monitoring frequency and with the degree to which quantitative metrics are accepted as proxies for personal worth. The true attractor, S^0, is defined as Calibrated Social Presence: the capacity to engage socially, attend to relevant feedback, and adjust behavior without chronic surveillance of one's standing.
S^0 is not social indifference; it is a dynamic equilibrium in which status information is processed proportionally rather than amplified. Three sustaining mechanisms maintain W_CSSM: (1) position-as-safety, in which rank is encoded not as preference but as protection—monitoring feels like threat-prevention because, developmentally, social standing was genuinely precarious; (2) monitoring-as-control, in which checking provides the illusion of agency over one's standing even when standing is determined entirely by others' evaluations; and (3) number-as-worth-proxy, in which quantitative metrics come to carry the emotional weight of self-assessment, making each data point a verdict.
We formalize the Monitoring Paradox: chronic status monitoring amplifies the rank anxiety it is designed to resolve. Each check generates temporary relief with rapid decay, compelling the next check; simultaneously, the visible behavior of chronic monitoring may signal the status-insecurity it aims to conceal, undermining the position being protected. Return paths from W_CSSM include monitoring-frequency reduction protocols, decoupling interventions targeting number-as-worth-proxy, and engagement-over-metrics reorientation.
