Compulsive speed—the chronic tendency to accelerate through tasks, conversations, and experience—is reconceptualized here not as a productive adaptation but as a wrong attractor: a self-reinforcing dynamical state that systematically displaces the agent from calibrated paced engagement, the ground state (S^0) of optimal functioning. Drawing on dynamical systems theory, attractor geometry, and the phenomenology of avoidance, we introduce a formal displacement framework in which speed operates as a depth-avoidance mechanism.
We define S^0 as the state of tempo-appropriate engagement with task depth, relational texture, and reflective availability. We model compulsive speed as an attractor basin W with characteristic stability properties: low activation energy for entry, high barriers to exit, and a reflection-foreclosure dynamics that prevent the agent from computing whether acceleration is warranted.
We present nine formal propositions characterizing the structure of W, the accumulated displacement cost, and the conditions for return. We distinguish the acceleration-override architecture—an automatic overriding of pace-regulation in response to anxiety signals—from genuine urgency response. We analyze how modernity's productivity ideology deepens the basin. The return path is theorized as requiring deliberate deceleration, tolerance of unstructured time, and re-exposure to depth-discomfort.
Clinical and practical implications are drawn for ADHD, Type-A behavioral patterns, time urgency, and contemporary productivity culture.
