Compulsive Storytelling as Contact-Substitution Wrong Attractor: The Narrative Armor Architecture, the Story Paradox, and the Return to Calibrated Presence

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · contact-substitution wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive storytelling is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CST within the displacement framework: the chronic use of anecdote, narrative, and personal story as a substitute for genuine present-moment contact; the person who responds to every direct question with a story, who fills silences with anecdotes, who cannot be in a moment without converting it into narrative; organized around the belief that presence without story is exposure.

The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated narrative engagement — the capacity to share stories when they genuinely illuminate, connect, or communicate; to be present in conversation without narrative armor; to answer direct questions directly; to be in a moment without converting it into a story about it. Three mechanisms sustain the storytelling basin: presence-as-exposure belief (being genuinely present — without narrative, without performance, without the managed self that storytelling produces — exposes the person to being seen as they actually are; stories provide a version of the self that is curated, paced, and controlled; direct presence provides a self that is raw and improvised; the storyteller fears the raw self and takes refuge in the curated one); story-as-connection proxy (stories do produce genuine connection, but mediated by the story rather than by direct contact with the storyteller; the audience connects with the narrative persona, not with the person; the storyteller receives warmth but not genuine contact, and must tell more stories to receive more warmth); and silence-as-void (silences are experienced as threatening voids that must be filled; the storyteller cannot sit in silence with another person because the silence feels like absence or failure; they are missing the discovery that silence between two present people is not a void but a form of contact).

The central Story Paradox states: compulsive storytelling reliably produces the disconnection it is organized to prevent; the person who uses stories to connect produces audiences rather than intimates — they are experienced as entertaining rather than close; the connection genuine presence would produce is perpetually deferred in favor of the more controlled connection that story produces.

Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor structure, with developmental roots in families where storytelling was the primary mode of emotional processing.
