Compulsive Triangulating as Direct-Conflict-Avoidance Wrong Attractor: The Third-Party Architecture, Bilateral-Resolution Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Direct Address

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive triangulating—the habitual routing of interpersonal conflict through a third party rather than addressing the conflicting party directly—functions as a wrong attractor in the dynamics of bilateral conflict resolution. Rather than resolving the tension at its source, triangulation diffuses it into a three-body relational field that is structurally incapable of producing genuine resolution.

We formalize this within the Phronesis displacement framework, treating triangulating as a high- displacement pattern that progressively forecloses the bilateral-resolution basin through repeated avoidance conditioning. The third-party architecture is analyzed mechanistically: the intermediary serves as a conflict prosthesis, generating temporary relief through indirect processing while rendering direct address increasingly aversive and increasingly impossible.

We introduce the Bilateral-Resolution Foreclosure Basin as the attractor neighborhood from which exit requires not the suppression of triangulating behavior but the recovery of calibrated direct-address capacity—the tolerance and skill to bring the concern to the person it concerns. Nine formal propositions govern the geometry of this attractor. The discussion connects the formal apparatus to Bowen family systems theory, workplace gossip as structural triangulation, passive aggression as dyadic triangulation, and the clinical implications of direct-conflict capacity as a recoverable competence.

The return to direct address is characterized as a turning toward the original conflict rather than a turning around: contact with the bilateral field as the only genuine exit from the wrong attractor.
