Compulsive Uniqueness Seeking as Distinction-Compulsion Wrong Attractor: The Identity-via-Negation Architecture, Mainstream-Aversion Basin, and the Return to Grounded Distinctiveness

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Compulsive uniqueness seeking — the chronic pattern of organizing identity around being fundamentally unlike everyone else, producing compulsive avoidance of anything mainstream or shared, and inability to participate in common human experiences without anxiety about losing distinctiveness — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CUS in the landscape of grounded distinctiveness.

The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as grounded distinctiveness: the capacity to have a genuine individual character that expresses naturally through authentic preferences, values, and ways of being — without requiring systematic difference from others to feel real, and without anxiety when one's genuine preferences overlap with others'. W_CUS is rigorously distinguished from healthy individuality, genuine unconventionality, legitimate countercultural engagement, and appropriate resistance to conformity pressure.

Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: identity via negation (the compulsive uniqueness seeker defines themselves primarily by what they are not — not mainstream, not conventional; D(ξ) is generated by discovering that one's preferences are shared), mainstream aversion cascade (any positive feeling toward something popular is immediately suppressed; genuine preferences are progressively replaced by anti-preferences), and uniqueness credentialing (continuous demonstration of distinctiveness through obscure references and contrarian takes becomes an exhausting performance leaving no room for genuine discovery).

The Distinctiveness Paradox is central: compulsive uniqueness seeking reliably produces the homogeneity it is organized to escape — by defining oneself against the mainstream, the compulsive uniqueness seeker is just as determined by the mainstream as the person who follows it. Nine formal propositions characterize the grounded distinctiveness ground state, the distinction-compulsion wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the distinctiveness paradox, developmental roots in environments where being ordinary was dangerous, and return paths through IFS work, genuine preference exploration, ACT values clarification, and graduated exposure to shared experience.
