The healthy ground state S0 is generous accurate acknowledgment: the capacity to give recognition and positive feedback where genuinely warranted, without strategic rationing.
Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: recognition-as-currency belief (the withholder operates from the premise that positive feedback has value only through scarcity; to acknowledge freely is to devalue the currency and surrender influence; this belief masquerades as wisdom — 'I don't want to create false confidence' — while functioning as power-maintenance); approval as conditional control (by making validation conditional and rare, the withholder creates chronic seeking behavior that produces compliance and proximity; others work harder and remain dependent on the withholder's judgment); and inflation-prevention rationalization (the withholder fears that consistent validation will spoil the recipient, produce over-confidence, or eliminate the seeking behavior that sustains the withholder's sense of influence).
The central Dependence Paradox states: compulsive validation-withholding reliably produces the distance and independence it is organized to prevent; those subjected to chronic withholding either develop over-confidence by finding other sources or progressively disengage from a relationship that is chronically unrewarding. Nine propositions characterize the attractor, developmental roots in environments of chronically insufficient acknowledgment, and return paths through distinguishing encouragement from manipulation, IFS work, and graduated authentic praise practice.
