Compulsive Verbal Rehearsal as Contact-Avoidance Wrong Attractor: The Pre-Scripting Architecture, Spontaneity-Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Relational Presence

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · contact-avoidance wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

We apply the Displacement Framework (DF) to compulsive verbal rehearsal (W_CVR), characterised as the chronic pre-scripting of conversations before having them: mentally composing and rehearsing what will be said, how the other will respond, and how one will in turn respond, in sufficient detail and with sufficient compulsiveness that the rehearsal becomes an anxiety-management ritual rather than a genuine preparation.

Compulsive verbal rehearsal constitutes a contact-avoidance wrong attractor in the DF landscape: the individual displaces from the healthy ground state S^0 — Calibrated Relational Presence, the capacity to enter conversation with genuine openness to the other's actual responses, to listen without pre-constructed filters, and to speak from live experience rather than pre-approved text — into a basin W_CVR maintained by three interlocking mechanisms.

The first mechanism is script-as-anxiety-reduction: rehearsing a conversation temporarily lowers pre-conversation anxiety, reinforcing the rehearsal loop and training the individual to treat the real conversation as dangerous unless preceded by adequate scripting. The second mechanism is deviation-from-script-as-failure: any actual conversational development that diverges from the rehearsed scenario — the other person responds unexpectedly, introduces a new topic, expresses an emotion that was not anticipated — triggers distress and interpretive rigidity, making genuine spontaneity feel not merely uncomfortable but dangerous.

The third mechanism is rehearsal-as-relationship-simulation: the rehearsed conversation gradually substitutes for the actual one, providing illusory social satisfaction and reducing the felt urgency of real contact. Together these mechanisms constitute the Rehearsal Paradox: the more one rehearses to make contact feel safe, the more the rehearsal itself prevents real contact, because the scripted self cannot meet the real other.

Developmental roots are identified in environments where wrong answers carried significant consequences and hypervigilant adaptation to unpredictable adults made pre-scripting a genuine survival strategy. Return paths include deliberate spontaneity practice, scripted- conversation identification and disruption, and present-moment listening training. Nine formal propositions with proofs, three definitions, and two remarks are developed within the DF framework.
