Creativity is the controlled departure from the ground state of the known—S^0_known—followed by a return that brings something new back. The creative act requires D(_conceptual): a departure from existing frameworks, categories, and solutions. The insight (aha moment) is the return: the discovery of a new S^0_known that was not previously accessible. Creativity is not random departure—it is departure with return.
Noise is departure without return. Art, science, mathematics, and design are all displacement navigation in conceptual space: the creator departs from the known, navigates unfamiliar D(), and returns with something that becomes the new S^0_known for others. We develop this framework across analogy, constraint, incubation, expertise, artistic form, scientific revolution, and creative block, arriving at a central proposition: creative output quality is maximized at an intermediate D(_conceptual)—close enough to S^0_known to cohere, far enough to reach genuinely new ground.
