Defensive Pessimism as Negative-Expectation Wrong Attractor: The Functional-to-Identity Transition, Chronic Low-Expectation Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Hope

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · negative-expectation wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Defensive pessimism — the coping strategy of setting low expectations before performance, mentally simulating failure, then using that simulation as motivation — is carefully distinguished from its pathological pole, which is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_DP in the landscape of calibrated hope. Following Norem's foundational work, the paper affirms that defensive pessimism functions adaptively for many people, reducing anxiety and motivating preparation.

The wrong attractor is located specifically at the functional-to-identity transition: when what begins as a useful strategy becomes identity-constitutive ('I'm a pessimist, it's who I am'), applied in contexts where it is not useful, generating self-fulfilling negative outcomes, and maintained by social reinforcement as the 'realistic' one who wasn't disappointed. Two basin mechanisms are identified: the self-fulfilling prophecy (low expectations reduce effort, increasing likelihood of poor outcomes, confirming the expectation) and identity resistance to positive evidence (success is discounted as luck to preserve the pessimist self-concept).

The healthy ground state S^0 is calibrated hope — neither inflated optimism nor systematically deflated expectation — characterized by evidence-responsive updating. Nine formal propositions characterize the functional form, the transition, the two basin mechanisms, social reinforcement, differential diagnosis from depression and learned helplessness, and return paths through Seligman's ABCDE model and evidence-updating practices.
