Deforestation as Ecological Ground State Destruction: Forest Displacement, Wrong Attractor Succession, and the Amazon Tipping Point

We apply the displacement framework to deforestation and ecosystem collapse. Mature forest ecosystems represent ecological ground states S^0_ forest accumulated over centuries of successional dynamics—complex, high-dimensional attractor configurations maintained by seed banks, mycorrhizal networks, carbon stocks, and self-sustaining water cycles. Industrial deforestation constitutes catastrophic displacement: not merely perturbation of the forest system, but removal of the ground state itself.

Post-clearing regrowth does not return the system to S^0_ forest; it converges instead to a secondary wrong attractor—degraded scrub, monoculture plantation, or savanna—characterized by far lower biodiversity, carbon stocks, and hydrological productivity. We formalize the displacement vector magnitude, the irreversibility conditions under which true return is blocked, and the phase-transition structure of the Amazon tipping point, where cumulative deforestation crosses a critical threshold _c beyond which the biome can no longer sustain its own rainfall and successional dynamics.

Extinction events are formalized as permanent wrong-attractor fixation. We derive eight propositions from the framework and argue that restoration ecology constitutes partial, asymptotic return toward—but not recovery of—the ecological ground state.
