Embarrassment Rumination as Social-Shame Wrong Attractor: The Social-Threat-Persistence Architecture, Audience-Generalization Basin, and the Return to Social Self-Integration

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · social-shame wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Embarrassment rumination — the compulsive replay of past embarrassing social moments, producing chronic activation of shame and social threat response around long-concluded events, and progressive social self-consciousness that degrades future social engagement — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_ER in the landscape of social self-integration. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as social self-integration: the capacity to experience embarrassing moments, process the associated shame and social feedback, integrate what is genuinely informative, and release the episode — returning to social engagement without chronic activation around concluded events.

W_ER is rigorously distinguished from appropriate processing of genuinely serious social errors, healthy social learning from mistakes, legitimate self-reflection on relational patterns, and adaptive social caution in genuinely hostile environments. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: social threat persistence (embarrassing memories retain their original threat-response activation — each replay re-activates the full shame and social threat response as if the event were occurring; D(ξ) is generated by memory retrieval cues), audience generalization (rumination expands the imagined audience from original witnesses to everyone who might have heard, deepening the scope of social threat with each replay), and prospective contamination (embarrassment rumination about past events contaminates future social engagement, producing self-consciousness that makes new embarrassments more likely).

The Social Competence Paradox is central: embarrassment rumination reliably produces the social failures it is organized to prevent — the chronic self-consciousness produced by ruminating on past embarrassments degrades the spontaneous social engagement that allows genuine competent social performance. Nine formal propositions characterize the social self-integration ground state, the social-shame wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the social competence paradox, developmental roots in environments where embarrassment had serious consequences, and return paths through cognitive defusion, self-compassion, IFS work, and spotlight effect disconfirmation.
