Emotional Labor Exhaustion as Chronic Affective Depletion Wrong Attractor: Surface Acting, Feeling Rule Compliance, and the Return to Authentic Emotional Presence

Emotional labor exhaustion — the chronic state of affective depletion from sustained surface acting in care and service roles — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_EL in the landscape of authentic emotional presence. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as authentic emotional presence: the capacity to engage emotionally in care and service work from genuine feeling rather than performance, with regulated self-disclosure and sustainable boundaries.

W_EL arises through Hochschild's (1983) surface acting mechanism: the suppression-display gap xi(t) = |e_d - e_f| generates displacement cost at each interaction, and cumulative Phi exceeds recovery capacity. Two acting variants are characterized: surface acting (high displacement cost) and deep acting (lower but still costly). W_EL disproportionately affects feminized care roles through gendered feeling rule systems.
