External Validation Dependency as Identity-Outsourcing Wrong Attractor: The Approval-as-Existence Architecture, Contingent Self-Worth Basin, and the Return to Grounded Self-Regard

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · identity-outsourcing wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

External validation dependency — the stable pattern in which self-worth and the sense of existing meaningfully depend on others' approval, admiration, or recognition — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_EVD in the landscape of grounded self-regard. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as grounded self-regard: a stable sense of one's own worth that is responsive to but not dependent on others' approval — capable of taking in praise and criticism proportionately without being structurally constituted by either.

Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: the approval-as-existence function (positive feedback from others doesn't merely feel good — it constitutes the sense of being real and worthy; absence of validation produces existential anxiety rather than disappointment), the validation-seeking escalation (the underlying worth deficit is never satisfied by external validation alone, requiring increasing doses while the structural absence of internalized worth remains — mirroring addiction dynamics), and the authentic-self suppression loop (to maintain validation, the individual presents the version of self most likely to receive approval; over time the authentic self becomes inaccessible, making genuine self-regard impossible).

The impossible task paradox is central: external validation cannot provide what it is sought to provide — internalized worth requires different means. Nine formal propositions characterize the approval-contingent basin, the three mechanisms, the impossible task, developmental roots, social media amplification, return paths through SDT-based internalization and self-compassion, and distinction from healthy social responsiveness.
