Fear of disappointing others — the chronic dread of being the cause of another person's disappointment, producing compulsive pre-emptive fulfillment of real and imagined expectations at the cost of authentic responsiveness — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_FDO in the landscape of authentic responsiveness. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as authentic responsiveness: the capacity to respond genuinely to others' needs and preferences — with real care and appropriate consideration — while remaining grounded in one's own authentic responses, limits, and values, without organizing one's behavior around preventing all possible disappointment.
W_FDO is rigorously distinguished from appropriate concern for others' wellbeing, healthy relational sensitivity, genuine helpfulness, and legitimate conflict avoidance in genuinely hostile environments. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: catastrophized disappointment (the disappointment-fearer treats another's disappointment as catastrophic — a relational rupture, withdrawal of love, or confirmation of inadequacy; D(ξ) is generated by any potential disappointment signal), pre-emptive expectation fulfillment (rather than responding to others' actual needs, the disappointment-fearer compulsively scans for and fulfills anticipated expectations before they are expressed, producing a fawn response that substitutes anticipatory compliance for authentic engagement), and the expectation trap (pre-emptive fulfillment teaches others to expect unlimited accommodation; each successful fulfillment raises the baseline expectation, making future disappointment more likely and the cost of authentic refusal higher).
The Relationship Paradox is central: fear of disappointing others reliably produces the relational damage it is organized to prevent — chronic pre-emptive fulfillment generates resentment, inauthenticity, and progressive depletion that ultimately ruptures or hollows the relationship. Nine formal propositions characterize the authentic responsiveness ground state, the catastrophized-disappointment wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the relationship paradox, developmental roots in emotional parentification and fawn response conditioning, and return paths through IFS, EFT, self-compassion, and ACT values-based action.
