Fear of intimacy — the stable pattern of blocking genuine emotional closeness despite desiring connection — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_FI in the landscape of graduated vulnerability. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as graduated vulnerability: the capacity to disclose genuine needs, fears, and emotional states in calibrated proportion to relational trust and context.
W_FI is rigorously distinguished from appropriate privacy, healthy independence, introversion, and legitimate relational caution. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: vulnerability catastrophization (closeness is experienced as intrinsically dangerous — triggering fears of abandonment, engulfment, or loss of self), the counterdependence loop (self-sufficiency becomes identity — needing no one becomes the adapted self, making closeness feel like weakness or regression), and pseudo-intimacy substitution (surface warmth, humor, busyness, and intellectual connection substitute for actual depth, providing the appearance of relatedness without its risk).
The closeness paradox is central: the individual genuinely desires connection while simultaneously engineering distance — the push-pull dynamic confirms both the desire and the defense. Nine formal propositions characterize vulnerability catastrophization, the counterdependence identity loop, the pseudo-intimacy substitution mechanism, the closeness paradox, attachment theory roots, gender expression differences, the selected partner dynamic, therapeutic return paths, and the distinction from healthy independence.
