Fear of Merger as Connection-Avoidance Wrong Attractor: The Self-Loss Architecture, Protective-Distance Basin, and the Return to Differentiated Connection

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · connection-avoidance wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Fear of merger — the chronic dread of losing oneself in intimate relationship, producing compulsive maintenance of emotional and relational distance as protection against the imagined catastrophe of self-dissolution through connection — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_FOM in the landscape of differentiated connection. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as differentiated connection: the capacity to be genuinely close and genuinely affected by another — allowing them to matter, to influence, to be needed — while maintaining a stable enough sense of one's own being that closeness is not experienced as annihilation.

W_FOM is rigorously distinguished from avoidant attachment (which is broadly about closeness avoidance), appropriate autonomy maintenance, and healthy boundaries in genuinely enmeshed relationships. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: self-loss catastrophization (the merger-fearing person has a fundamental belief that genuine closeness leads to self-dissolution; D(ξ) is generated by genuine emotional closeness or being significantly affected by another), distance as self-preservation (the compulsive maintenance of emotional distance is experienced as self-protection; the merger-fearer maintains a buffer zone — never fully arriving, always keeping an exit available), and intimacy-closeness inversion (because closeness is experienced as dangerous, genuine intimacy becomes threatening precisely when it is most desired; the merger-fearer may choose unavailable partners, pursue closeness intensely and reflexively withdraw when achieved).

The Connection Paradox is central: fear of merger reliably produces the self-dissolution it is organized to prevent — the self protected by isolation becomes progressively emptier, requiring more distance to protect an increasingly diminished interior. Nine formal propositions characterize the differentiated connection ground state, the connection-avoidance wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the connection paradox, developmental roots in enmeshment and parentification, and return paths through Bowen differentiation work, EFT, IFS, and graduated closeness exposure.
