Fermentation as the First Refusal: Life as Managed Displacement

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · the first refusal

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

We apply the displacement framework to the emergence of fermentation, proposing that the origin of fermentative metabolism is best understood as the first biological refusal of terminal ground. A cell at the separatrix between survival and death, deprived of oxygen, faces three attractors: aerobic respiration (optimal, unavailable), death (terminal ground, zero cost), and fermentation (sustained displacement, positive cost, continued accumulation).

Fermentation is the third attractor --- suboptimal in energy efficiency but superior in one respect: it continues. We formalize life itself as managed displacement () and show that fermentation discovers the minimum viable displacement rate compatible with continuation. The same algorithm runs in every anaerobic organism, every yeast cell, and every hypoxic muscle fiber. Every glass of wine is a four-billion-year argument that $$ can be worth it.
