Hopelessness — the stable negative expectation that the future holds no relief, that one's efforts are futile, and that distress is permanent — is a wrong attractor W_hopeless in which the person's future-orientation system is captured in foreclosure. We apply the Displacement Framework to formalize hopelessness. The future-oriented engagement ground state S0_future is defined via Snyder's hope theory: agency thinking (will) combined with pathways thinking (way).
W_hopeless is maintained through two interlocking mechanisms: Beck's cognitive triad (negative views of self, world, and future — with the future-foreclosure component as the most suicidogenic; Beck Hopelessness Scale as landscape measure) and Abramson et al.'s reformulated learned helplessness (stable-global-internal attributional style as basin-deepening modifier). Nine formal propositions cover: S0_future as hope-theoretic ground state (P1), W_hopeless as future-foreclosure wrong attractor (P2), Beck's cognitive triad and BHS (P3), the learned helplessness mechanism (P4), Abramson's hopelessness depression subtype (P5), suicidality as extreme hopelessness basin with Joiner's interpersonal theory (P6), temporal narrative collapse and poverty of positive future thoughts (MacLeod et al. 1993) (P7), cumulative Phi_hopeless across motivational, behavioral, relational, temporal, and suicidality domains (P8), and return paths including CBT future-orientation, behavioral activation, hope therapy, problem-solving therapy, and meaning-based approaches (P9).
