We apply the Displacement Framework to learned helplessness, formalizing it as return-path erasure: the organism has correctly learned that return paths were blocked in the original context and incorrectly generalizes this to new contexts where return paths exist. The agentive ground state S°_agency is defined as the configuration in which the organism initiates action when D(ξ) > 0, outcome-contingency learning is intact, and effort is invested proportional to expected return-path gradient.
Inescapable shock forms W_helpless by flattening the cognitive landscape model: when D(ξ_action) consistently fails to reduce displacement cost, the gradient-following mechanism learns the landscape is flat, and passivity becomes the minimum-cost state. Nine formal propositions are derived covering: S°_agency as functional landscape posture (P1), W_helpless formation under inescapable D(ξ) (P2), self-reinforcement through passive coping (P3), generalization radius via Abramson-Seligman-Teasdale attributional dimensions (P4), the depression link as triple-domain return-path erasure via Beck's cognitive triad (P5), neurobiological substrate in DRN serotonin, vmPFC controllability detection, and LC norepinephrine (P6), Maier's controllability immunization as S°_agency pre-establishment (P7), insufficiency of insight alone as return path (P8), and environmental imposition of generalized helplessness through domestic violence, poverty traps, institutional care, and systemic oppression (P9).
