Leisure Optimization as Productivity-Logic-Applied-to-Rest Wrong Attractor: The Maximum-Value-from-Time-Off Architecture, Enjoyment-Pressure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Restorative Play

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Leisure optimization—the chronic application of productivity logic and instrumental reasoning to non-work time—is formalized within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W_LO in the landscape of restorative experience. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated restorative play: unstructured, low-stakes leisure with genuine capacity for absorption, spontaneity, and non-instrumental engagement with time.

We rigorously distinguish W_LO from appropriate planning, healthy anticipation, and reasonable vacation preparation. Three mechanisms maintain the basin: (1) performance-frame transfer, in which the productivity-oriented person has a single dominant frame—maximize output from inputs—that colonizes leisure because they have no alternative frame for non-instrumental time, so that rest feels like wasted time unless it can be rendered productive; (2) optimization-as-anxiety-management, in which the obsessive research, scheduling, and structuring of leisure is driven not by genuine enthusiasm but by anxiety that unplanned time will be wasted, the planning functioning as a displacement from simply inhabiting unstructured time; and (3) the enjoyment-monitoring feedback loop, in which monitoring whether one is enjoying oneself disrupts the absorption that produces genuine enjoyment—a mechanism formalized by Csikszentmihalyi's flow research—so that self-monitoring prevents flow, confirming that the leisure underperformed and requiring more optimization next time.

The central paradox of W_LO—formalized in Proposition 7—is that leisure optimization undermines the very conditions that make leisure restorative: unstructured time, low stakes, absorption, and spontaneity. The optimizer approaches rest with the same instrumental orientation as work, producing the experience of “working at resting” with attendant anxiety, performance monitoring, and a chronic sense of failure when rest does not return sufficient value.

Nine propositions characterize the ground state, the wrong attractor, its three maintaining mechanisms, developmental origins, the Optimization Paradox, return paths, and the critical distinction from healthy preparation. Return requires deoptimization practice, frame-switching capacity, flow cultivation, and the recovery of intrinsic motivation for non-instrumental time.
