Loneliness is not the absence of company. It is displacement from the social ground state () --- the relational configuration in which the organism functions at minimum cost. We formalize loneliness as accumulated social displacement cost () and identify three compounding mechanisms: (1) relational depletion --- the biological systems that depend on social contact (oxytocin, vagal tone, cortisol regulation) are deprived of their normal inputs; (2) hypervigilance installation --- the isolated nervous system recalibrates threat appraisal, converting social stimuli from neutral to threatening, making return to social ground state progressively more costly; and (3) self-prediction loops --- loneliness alters self-perception in ways that predict further social withdrawal.
The total biological cost is not metaphorical: loneliness increases all-cause mortality by 26\% (Holt-Lunstad et al.\ 2015), equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. We argue this mortality cost is the direct biological expression of sustained accumulation. Treatment is path reconstruction: rebuilding the return path to from within the hypervigilant wrong attractor state that chronic loneliness installs.
