Maladaptive Daydreaming as Immersive Fantasy Wrong Attractor: The Reinforcement Differential, Trauma Precipitant, Identity Bifurcation, and the Return to Volitional Attention

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD), first characterized by Eli Somer (2002), is a condition in which immersive, elaborated fantasy narratives displace real-world engagement, causing significant functional impairment. We apply the Displacement Framework to formalize MD as a wrong attractor W_MD in the attentional landscape. The adaptive ground state S0_attention is defined as volitional, flexible mind-wandering that informs and enriches real-world function.

W_MD arises and deepens through a reinforcement differential: fantasy provides superior emotional reinforcement relative to the real world, creating a self-sustaining loop in which fantasy entry yields reward unavailable in reality, disinvestment from reality deepens the differential, and imaginal standards elevate beyond real-world reach. Nine formal propositions cover: S0_attention as volitional bounded mind-wandering (P1), W_MD reinforcement-differential architecture (P2), the fantasy-reality reinforcement gap as basin-deepening mechanism (P3), trauma as precipitating displacement — MD originates as adaptive escape from real-world D(xi_trauma) (P4), kinematic markers (rocking, pacing, lip movement) as somatic basin-depth indicators (P5), ADHD-MD overlap — attentional dysregulation as landscape instability enabling W_MD entry (P6), cumulative Phi_MD across academic, occupational, social, and sleep domains (P7), identity bifurcation — fantasy-self vs. real-self divergence as W_MD deepening (P8), and return paths including behavioral activation, stimulus control, trauma processing, and identity integration (P9).

Connections to dissociation, absorption, and ADHD are analyzed.
