Nomophobia as Digital-Tether Wrong Attractor: The Constant-Connection Architecture, Offline-Dread Basin, and the Return to Embodied Presence

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Nomophobia — the fear of being without one's mobile phone or internet connection — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_NP in the landscape of embodied presence. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as embodied presence: the capacity to be fully in the physical world and present to immediate experience without digital mediation, able to tolerate periods of disconnection without distress.

W_NP is rigorously distinguished from professional digital necessity, appropriate connectivity, and healthy technology use. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: connectivity as ground state substitution (the phone/network becomes the primary anchor for identity, orientation, and safety, replacing embodied and relational anchoring — being online becomes S^0 in subjective experience), variable reward entrainment (notification streams operate on variable-ratio reinforcement schedules — the most potent known schedule for behavioral conditioning — maximizing checking frequency and deepening the basin), and the FOMO-proximity loop (disconnection triggers fear of missed events or information; the loop reconnect → brief relief → fear of what else happened → check again → is self-maintaining).

The Presence Paradox is central: constant digital connectivity produces the disconnection — from self, body, others, place — it is organized to prevent. Nine formal propositions characterize the embodied presence ground state, the digital-tether wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the presence paradox, developmental roots in the attention economy, and return paths through digital minimalism, embodied practices, and attention restoration.
