The ocean is the largest continuous physical system on Earth and the primary thermal and chemical buffer of the planetary ground state. Absorbing approximately 93% of excess heat generated by anthropogenic greenhouse forcing and 26–30% of atmospheric CO_2, the ocean regulates precipitation, weather patterns, and biological productivity across the entire planet. We formalize ocean displacement within the Displacement Framework across three coupled dimensions: thermal (_temp), chemical (_pH, _O_2), and biological (_biodiversity).

Each dimension is measurable, each is currently displaced from the pre-industrial ground state S^0_ocean, and each accumulates under the irreversibility condition DC5. We characterize the coupling structure between these dimensions, identify DC9 tipping points in thermohaline circulation and coral reef systems, and trace the structural link between ocean displacement and the dietary displacement analyzed in prior work.

The ocean is not a passive sink; it is the largest active D()-minimizing system on Earth, and it is losing that capacity.
