Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a profile associated with autism spectrum conditions characterized by extreme avoidance of ordinary everyday demands, driven by anxiety and an acute need for autonomy and control rather than by oppositional motivation. We apply the Displacement Framework to PDA, advancing the claim that the core mechanism is not behavioral noncompliance but a neurologically grounded threat response in which demands constitute displacement events D(xi_demand) that the PDA nervous system processes as existential threats to autonomy.
We define S0_autonomy, the autonomy ground state, as the capacity to engage with demands without experiencing them as threats to selfhood. We characterize the PDA Wrong Attractor W_pda as a control-maintenance configuration: stable, energetically costly, and self-reinforcing. We analyze the compliance paradox — standard behavioral interventions increase demand load and therefore worsen the presentation — and propose that return-path support must be organized around demand reduction rather than compliance augmentation.
Accumulated displacement Phi over developmental time explains educational collapse, family system distress, and adolescent mental health crises.
