PhronesisPerformance anxiety constitutes one of the most pervasive and paradoxical disruptions of human competence. Skilled performers—musicians, athletes, public speakers, surgeons—often exhibit marked degradation precisely when stakes are highest and execution is most consequential. We propose that performance anxiety is best understood not as a simple arousal problem but as an evaluation-collapse wrong attractor: a self-reinforcing dynamical configuration in which the appraisal of external evaluation triggers displacement from calibrated embodied expression (\(S^0\)), generating a competence-foreclosure basin from which spontaneous recovery is impeded.
We develop a formal displacement framework centered on three constructs: the ground state \(S^0\) representing calibrated embodied expression, the displacement field \(D()\) measuring deviation from that state, and the accumulated displacement \(= D()\,dt\) as a measure of performance degradation over time. We characterize the wrong attractor \(W\) via basin geometry, stability analysis, and bifurcation structure.
Nine formal propositions articulate the architecture of this model. We then examine the appraisal-threat mechanism, the self-monitoring paradox at the core of the competence-foreclosure basin, and the conditions under which return to \(S^0\)—including flow states—becomes possible. The framework synthesizes findings from sports psychology, music performance research, social anxiety literature, and dynamical systems theory, yielding novel therapeutic predictions.
