Performative Busyness as Rest-Intolerance Wrong Attractor: The Activity-as-Worth Architecture, Stillness Aversion Basin, and the Return to Deliberate Engagement

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · rest-intolerance wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Performative busyness — the compulsive maintenance of visible high-activity states as identity validation and as avoidance of stillness — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_PB in the landscape of deliberate engagement. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as deliberate engagement: the capacity to choose activity or rest based on genuine need, purpose, and value, without busyness serving as identity signal or anxiety management.

Two reinforcing mechanisms sustain W_PB: busyness as status signal (the cultural equation of busy with important or worthy, especially in knowledge work and hustle culture) and busyness as anxiety management (stillness surfaces uncomfortable material that activity suppresses). The wrong attractor deepens through Protestant work ethic internalization, contemporary hustle culture glorification, and social media performance of constant productivity.

Nine formal propositions characterize the Veblen inversion of conspicuous leisure, the stillness aversion mechanism, the Weber-to-hustle culture basin formation, HPA dysregulation through chronic arousal without recovery, the Maslach burnout pathway, and return paths through structured rest, leisure rehabilitation, and values clarification.
