Performative Grief as Audience-Dependent Wrong Attractor: The Social-Grief Architecture, Witnessed-Mourning Basin, and the Return to Private Authenticity

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · audience-dependent wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Performative grief — grief organized around its social expression and audience validation rather than its private felt experience — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_PG in the landscape of private authentic mourning. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as private authenticity: grief felt in one's own body and time, independent of audience, neither performed for external validation nor suppressed by social expectation.

W_PG is rigorously distinguished from legitimate communal mourning, healthy shared grief, and culturally appropriate grief rituals. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: grief as identity signal (grief is recruited for social signaling — demonstrating the depth of love, the sensitivity of feeling; the display becomes the primary product rather than the expression of an interior process), the validation loop (witnessed grief produces sympathy and communal recognition — powerful reinforcers that maintain the performative posture; the performer must continue performing to continue receiving the reward that has substituted for actual mourning), and authentic grief foreclosure (private felt grief becomes inaccessible or intolerable; the individual cannot mourn alone; grief only registers when witnessed, foreclosing the private processing that constitutes actual mourning).

The Mourning Paradox is central: performative grief prevents the actual processing that allows return to equilibrium — the display of grief substitutes for rather than expresses the interior movement, freezing mourning rather than conducting it. Nine formal propositions characterize the private authenticity ground state, the audience-dependent wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the mourning paradox, developmental roots, and return paths through private mourning practices and grief therapy.
